Signs a Parent May Need Help at Home
For adult children helping a parent in Northern Virginia
From Gracewood Senior Living, Woodbridge, VA
Everyday signs to watch for
- Food and meals. An empty or out-of-date fridge, skipped meals, or clothes that fit more loosely than before.
- Mail and money. Unopened mail, late notices, bills paid twice or not at all.
- The house. Housework, laundry or yard work slipping, or clutter that makes walking harder.
- Personal care. Wearing the same clothes for days, skipping baths or showers, or more trouble getting dressed.
- Getting around. Holding on to furniture, avoiding stairs, a fall or near-fall, or bruises they cannot explain.
- Medicines and appointments. Pill bottles that are too full or empty too soon, or missed doctor visits.
- Driving. New dents or scrapes, getting lost on familiar roads, or friends mentioning close calls.
- Mood and social life. Dropping hobbies, skipping church or clubs, seeming lonely or withdrawn.
- Safety at home. A stove left on, doors left unlocked, or falling for phone and email scams.
- You are stretched thin. If the help you and your siblings give is starting to fall apart, that matters too.
What to do next
- Write down what you notice and when. Patterns over a few weeks tell you more than a single visit.
- Talk with your parent. Our guide on how to talk to a parent about assisted living has words that help.
- Bring in their doctor. Changes in memory, mood, weight or balance should be checked by a doctor. This guide is not medical advice.
- Look at the range of help. More help at home, adult day programs, a residential assisted living home, or a larger community. In Prince William County, the Area Agency on Aging also runs Adult Day Healthcare for qualifying residents.
- Get free local guidance. Call the Prince William Area Agency on Aging at (703) 792-6374, or outside the county, the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116.
Help at home or assisted living?
More help at home can work when needs are predictable and someone can cover the gaps. Assisted living may be worth a look when your parent needs help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing and getting around, or supervision for safety, more hours than family can cover.
Gracewood is a spacious residential assisted living home in Woodbridge with 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. Our CNA-certified caregivers provide 24-hour care with a 4:1 resident-to-caregiver ratio. Gracewood is an assisted living home, not a medical facility. Residents may keep their own doctors, home health or hospice.

Frequently asked questions
What are the most common signs a parent needs more help at home?
Missed meals, piled-up mail or bills, skipped bathing, falls or near-falls, missed medicines, new dents on the car and pulling away from friends. Several signs together over a few weeks matter more than one bad day.
Is one fall a reason to move to assisted living?
Not on its own. Talk with your parent and their doctor about what happened and what would help prevent another. If falls or near-falls keep happening, or no one is around to help, it may be time to look at more support.
Who can help us sort out options in Prince William County?
The Prince William Area Agency on Aging, at (703) 792-6374, helps older adults and families find local programs. Outside the county, the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 can connect you with your local agency.
Who is a good fit for Gracewood?
Our community is ideal for seniors who need help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, mobility assistance, or supervision for safety. Medication needs are reviewed during each resident’s assessment.
