How to Talk to a Parent About Assisted Living

For adult children helping a parent in Northern Virginia
From Gracewood Senior Living, Woodbridge, VA

Before you talk

  • Get on the same page as family. Talk with siblings and anyone else who helps. Agree on what you have noticed and who will lead the conversation.
  • Write down specific examples. "The mail has piled up for two weeks" lands better than "you are not managing." Our guide to signs a parent may need help at home can help you sort out what you are seeing.
  • Learn the options. More help at home, adult day programs, a residential assisted living home, or a larger community. Your parent will likely ask what each would look like.
  • Know the money basics. Find out whether your parent has long-term care insurance or may qualify for veterans or state programs. Our guide to paying for assisted living in Northern Virginia links to the official pages.

How to start the conversation

  1. Choose the moment. A quiet time at home, with no rush. Avoid big family events or the hour after a scare, unless safety cannot wait.
  2. Open with a question. "How are things going with the house these days?" or "What would make the day easier?"
  3. Use "I" statements. "I worry when I cannot reach you in the evening" is easier to hear than "You cannot live alone anymore."
  4. Listen. Let your parent name what has become hard. Their words will guide the next step better than yours.
  5. Talk about what they want to keep. Their routines, their own doctor, favorite furniture, time with grandchildren. A good move protects those things.

If your parent says no

That is normal. Very few people agree the first time. Try these instead of pushing for a decision:

  • Agree on one simple next step: a tour, more help at home, or a short stay to try it out.
  • Ask someone your parent trusts to join a later talk, such as their doctor, a faith leader or an old friend.
  • Offer choices, not ultimatums. "Would you rather look at places near your church or near us?"
  • Give it time, then come back to it.

If there is an urgent safety risk, act sooner. In an emergency, call 911.

Visit together

Seeing a place in person often changes the conversation. Tour two or three homes and let your parent ask the questions. Bring our checklist of what to ask on an assisted living tour.

At Gracewood, residents may keep their own doctors, home health and hospice providers, can bring familiar furniture, photos and belongings, and family visits are encouraged. We quote after a care look, in writing, on the tour. You can book a visit with the tour form below, or ask a quick question in our chat any time of day.

Take care of yourself, too

Caregiving is hard on families. In Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park, the Prince William Area Agency on Aging offers information and caregiver resources at (703) 792-6374. Outside the county, the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 can connect you with your local agency.

Frequently asked questions

When is the right time to talk to a parent about assisted living?

Before a crisis, if you can. Early conversations give your parent more say in the choice and give everyone time to visit places and look at costs.

What if my parent refuses to consider assisted living?

Many parents say no the first time. Listen to their reasons, agree on one next step such as a visit or more help at home, and come back to it later. If there is an urgent safety risk, act sooner, and in an emergency call 911.

Should siblings talk to a parent together?

Agree among yourselves first, then decide who leads. A calm one-on-one talk often goes better than a group that feels like an intervention.

Can we visit Gracewood together before deciding?

Yes. Call (703) 688-2388, answered 9:00 am to 5:00 pm ET every day, or use the tour form on this page. We quote after a care look, in writing, on the tour.
